Boxed Cake Mix

Cakes need layers.  You can bake a boxed cake in a jelly roll/cookie pan lined with parchment.  That easily makes 4 layers.

My frosting consists of one block of cream cheese mixed with a jar of vanilla curd.  I guess I didn't really make anything in this cake.  Mixing random stuff together still makes a pretty good cake.

Adding fruit to a cake makes it healthy.  You can substitute a cake with fruit for any meal.  My children agree.

January Reads

This month I read (in order of greatness):

An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth by Chris Hadfield
Non-fiction. File under:
-Life skills I wish I figured out a long time ago.
-A book I should force my children to read as teenagers.
-Nice mustache.

Predictably Irrational by Dan Ariely
Non-fiction.  File under:
-People are weird.  But I already knew that.
-Data driven.
-Some content revealed in superb TED talks.  Interesting Q&A blog.

The Help by Kathryn Stockett
Fiction.  File under:
-Pretty much what you'd expect from the previous 5 years of hubbub.
-My favorite book style: shifting points of view.
-Watching movie after reading book = movie that jumps all over the place.

Sea of Tranquility by Katja Millay
Fiction.  File under:
-Tragic teenage love stories.
-Reminiscent of author John Green.
-Likable. Must be younger than me to really enjoy the book, I think.

Daisy and the Big, Blue Sky

I finally figured out how to take pictures of Daisy while we are on outings.

She's riding on my back - it's the only surefire way to keep her from clawing out my eyeballs.

A Little Girl's Life

Daisy spends her day trying to figure out what it is people do with their day.
Watching some 'toons?  Okay, we'll try this out.
Not the best.

Daisy uses her extra large noggin to think of all sorts of ways to spend her day.

This will do.

Somebody is Sick

One is sick.  One is not.

While we were at the pharmacy getting Nels his meds I let him pick out one of the cars he always admires there that I never let him get.  They seem expensive for a healthy kid.  He picked out an ice cream truck and he has been hugging that thing ever since.

What is weird is when he answers my questions, he whispers very quietly.  When he demands something from me, he yells and cries.  When he talks to the TV, he does so in a normal voice.  I guess he is manipulating me?

Review: Q&A a Day for Kids

Nels graciously gave me Q&A a Day for Kids for Christmas.  I helped him pick it out "Nels, want to buy me this book for Christmas?" and he helped wrap it.  Everyday I ask the boys a question and I write it down in the book.  I think Nels has this thing aced.

If I were older, I would_____.
Guy: "Try to beat dad at games."
Nels: "Hurt dad." (Was he trying to repeat Guy?)

What are you especially good at?
Nels: "Computer."
Guy: "No, he's wrong."

_______ is a silly thing I did lately.
Nels:  Ate a pancake and a bee.
(Guy laughs)
Nels: Me not kidding, Guy.

Duplo Train Game Pt. 2

We could have missed the bus this morning because a member of our walking party was missing.  I finally located the missing person.
Nels is under my bed.  Playing that Duplo Train Game he loves.  When I finally located him he told me to leave him behind.  It think he said something about there was a terrible train accident and he was afraid he would be dead weight.  I yanked him out of there and forced him to walk.  It was an addicted gamer intervention.

Duplo Trains Game

Nels would like to suggest the Lego Duplo Trains game for all small children with Kindles.  It is such a good game it's worth sneaking around to play.

Lego Camp

Guy went to Lego camp where they built an amusement park in a day.  It even had front gates with minifigs lined up at ticket booths.  Inside the park there were bathrooms, a gift shop, a food court.  It was really neat.

Guy built these rides that moved by themselves.

The clock tower in the middle of the park.   The tower goes on for another foot where there is a little dude dangling off the top.  I overheard a girl mention that she was disappointed there wasn't a Chewbacca figure to put up there instead.  Chewbacca... King Kong... same thing.  They are both sore losers.  I guess they don't make King Kong minifigs and they make Chewbacca so she's the smart one for improvising.  I would have just used a hairy man.  Perhaps a wizard.

A Handsome Lady

Daisy received a top notch compliment today from a stranger while we were out.

"You are so cute you could almost be a girl"

Lunch in 2014

I asked two people to a New Years lunch before I got a taker - little Nels.

Our lunch conversations went something like this:
"Mom, look at that!"
"Mommmmmy, look!"
"Cut my ice, please."

I like him.  He's easily excitable.
