Lunch with the Kids

 Pizza Time!

I usually do fairly well taking the kids out to eat by myself.  But I put Daisy in a high chair for the first time.  Whoa.  It crippled me.  I was extremely distracted and I'm pretty sure Nels spent a fair amount of time tap dancing on the bar.  I can only go up from here.

It was well worth it, Daisy helped herself to the pizza.  Like a real human.  (I thought I could tie her to the high chair with a blanket but her blanket was too short so I had to hold it.  Next time I'm bring a rope.)

Delicious!  She had a delightful time being one of the big kids.

Fairytale Town

Took the kids to Fairytale Town in Sacramento yesterday.  It's weird going to places that aren't the desert.  It makes me feel like my children are so sheltered.  Nels saw a squirrel and he ran to it with his arm outstretched, like he would be able to pick it up and pet it.

Thankfully, the squirrel chose to climb up a tree instead of attack my son.

Another neat find - a praying mantis.  I tried to show it to Nels but quickly panicked when I realized that Nels steps on bugs for fun.  This bug was thankfully spared and relocated to a safer area.

Nels finally gets to do what he wishes - squish an egg.

We found Clifford, who is Guy's class mascot so I made him get over there for a photo.  He was very upset that there was a persons face inside Clifford's eyes.  He wasn't interested in any costumed characters after that discovery.  He is growing up.. ahh shoot.

But he's not too grown for a snow cone.  Neither am I for the record.

Itsa me, Mario.

Red Hat : $3
Red Shirt: $2.50
White Gloves: $1
Overalls: $1.50
Stuff that didn't work out: $3
Total $11 Mario Costume

I bought all this stuff at thrift stores and yard sales.  I just have to add some creative touches before Halloween and Nels will have a super Super Mario costume.  Guy's Luigi costume is still lacking.  Big kid overalls are not easy to find.  I might end up paying full price for his at a Western wear shop.  At least I saved enough here to justify the expense.

Daisy's Cake Adventure

Daisy escaped!

Thankfully she almost always comes back home to get in the cake line.
(This photos is for the sole purpose of documenting my new Zojirushi breadmaker.  I found this one on craigslist for pennies... 6,000 pennies.  I made Daisy sit in front of it so it looks like I'm not bragging too much.  Plus it is baking a chocolate cake and is the official start of the cake line.)

Daisy thinks this Zojirushi breadmaker makes awesome chocolate cake!  Wait, doesn't Daisy have a chocolate allergy?  We will find out.  She also ate some mango today so if anything happens I'm blaming the mango.  Mango is so gross.

Guy's Pet

Guy has a self-made pet porcupine.  He tried to feed it a pancake.  But porcupines don't like pancakes.  Guy's dad told him porcupines eat wood chips.  ??  I don't know.  So Guy came home from school with pockets full of wood chips stolen from the playground.  He's ready to do anything to keep his porcupine alive.

Super Why!

For Super Hero Dress-Up day at school Guy wanted to be Super Why!  (PBS cartoon character). I think it's a sweet idea.  And Guy was very kind to not give me a hard time with his less than perfect costume.

He claimed the teacher didn't know who he was dressed as but all the kids told her and now she really wants to watch the show.  His teacher is swell for saying that.

Spelling Pac-Man

Nels loves playing this fake Pac-Man game about eating letters.  We go to the library to play since don't have this kind of outdated stuff at home.  I jest.  We love the library.  Usually when we are there I try to get all of the kids computers running correctly (failure rate is about 95%) and I help other peoples kids use the computers.  For this effort the kids usually thank me by rubbing their sticky, smelly hands all over my face.  I would pay attention to my own kid but he usually convinces me to start clapping in the library.  Clapping in the library is noisy.

Birthday Cupcakes

I made some cupcakes to take to Guy's school.  I think that's okay?  I tried to make rainbow cupcakes.  It was kind of an annoying process.  Especially since Nels was being very picky about which color of batter he'd lick off of spoons.

Nels tried a half.  Must have been okay because he begged for the half we saved for Guy.
When Guy is done eating his cupcake, he can help me frost & sprinkle them.

Honey Time

We harvested honey from our bees.  By we I mean not me (as usual).  The brave one did.  But I helped make a sticky mess while trying to package the comb.  Tigger said it best when he said honey is icky, sticky stuff.  Just replace the icky with tasty.  I think this honey tastes different.  Not bad.  It's just.. nevada honey?

7 Months Old

Daisy is 7 months old today.

She still can not sit up.  I work with her and I think she is just in protest.

Angry Bird Pinata

Guy's birthday is coming up and he wants a yellow angry bird pinata.  I know how to make a pinata!  Inflate balloon, cover it in strips of newspaper coated in water-flour paste, let dry, pop and remove balloon.  I did it!  A yellow angry bird is a triangle shape?  Shenanigans!

I wadded up some newspaper, put it next to the balloon (I did try to tape it but the dried paste refused), and wrapped it in tissue paper.  I think this method could work for any shape.  As a bonus children shall be pelted with wadded up newspaper balls when the pinata is hit.  With hindsight I should have made the newspaper balls look like little baby birds so it would be like the children are getting attacked.

It actually looks like an angry bird to me.  Well an angry bird rip-off.  Which is exactly what this is.

Instead of filling the pinata with eggs, I found a bunch of tiny toys at the thrift store.  There are some genuine micro machines in there for the 80's kids' kids.  And some wee power rangers for the 90's kids' kids.

Bread Pudding

Guy has always been my little chef because he is oldest.  Now that Guy is in school it's time to train a new chef.  This might take awhile.

Cooking Advice from Nels:
Why risk your bread pudding turning out runny?  Just eat it raw.

Bread Pudding is a weird food.  You eat it.  It tastes good.  You eat some more.  It makes you sick.  I love bread pudding. http://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/over-the-top-blueberry-bread-pudding
