Nels Birthday Party

Nels will be 2 tomorrow but we had a party for him yesterday. A birthday fit for a knight!

Guy saw some pinatas at the store and demanded Nels have one. April is a no buy month for me so I said no, I'm watching my money. Guy then told anyone who would listen his mom doesn;t have enough money to buy a piranha. He could be right. I don;t know the going rate for those. Anyway, I made a pinata (decorated in cupcake liners). It even fell apart without an adult interfering. I think I like these a lot better than store bought pinatas.

I made the cupcakes too. Nels like to bark at them. I melted down chocolate and white chocolate to make the puppy face shapes.

Making Ratatouille

Guy's current favorite movie is Ratatouille.  He wanted to make the ratatouille Remy prepares so we watched a video on how to make it, he made a shopping list, and then asked me "Can we go to the grocery store today?  Yes or no.  Your choice."  It wasn't a hard choice.  I said no, several times.  But eventually I had to get some groceries so I let him tag along.  He ran around the produce section collecting all the ingredients he needed.  I was quite impressed.  He must have really studied that video on what everything looked like.

Nels wanted to help but he didn't watch the video so he wasn't working up to Guy's standards.

Guy said the ratatouille was really yummy, but he didn't eat a lot of it.  Oh well - whatever gets him excited to cook, especially vegetables

2 Months Old!

Lil' Daisy is 2 months old.   She is talking and smiling.  She's a real joy and Guy sums it up best with "I love that baby."

Musuem Time!

We went to the kids museum last week.  We stayed 2 hours and could have stayed longer if it hadn't been for mom getting tired of chasing Nels down.  Last time we had to leave early because Nels crawled into their play river and got soaked.  I tell Guy maybe someday he can go with just dad.

Can you tell Guy picks our activities?

This is what Nels prefers to do - find something interesting out a window.  Pretend to be totally enthralled with it.  As soon as mom feels safe and lets her guard down, run away.

We might just be the laziest people at the park...

Stuff I'm Trying in April

Spring Cleaning!
 photo Spring-Cleaning-Simpsons_zps03e06f5b.jpg
The less time I spend cleaning, the more time I can spend doing cool stuff.  So I'm going to spring clean all month so I can enjoy the summer.  My goal is just to get rid of a lot of stuff.  Less stuff to pick up, less stuff to clean around.

No Buy Month

It I want to get rid of stuff, I need to stop bringing it in.  When I first thought about it I came up with a couple of exceptions - I'll spend on Nels birthday, on an out-of-town shopping trip, on a couple of subscription boxes, etc.  And then it started to sound like any other month.  So, no exceptions!  I'll buy gas and groceries (goal of no more than $400 for the month for both) and I'll buy Nels a birthday present using some gift cards laying around the house.  I canceled all subscription boxes, except the ones that are prepaid (Citrus Lane, The Happy Trunk, Mother Goose Time.)  Guess it will make getting those a little more special.

Museum Membership

We joined the children's museum last month so now I'm going to be a responsible member (and mom) and go.

Crockpot Cooking

I need help getting dinner on the table lately... so I'm determined to get good at this crockpot thing!  My goal is to make at least one crockpot meal a week and hopefully find a couple recipes I would like to repeat.

My dad told me to watch this show.  I'm just aiming for Season 1.  I've not really a fan of Timothy Olyphant, but maybe he is just a really good actor and I've only seen him in roles of people I didn't like?  Deadwood comes to mind.

Stuff I Tried in March

Mother Goose Time
Mother Goose Time is a preschool curriculum for every weekday of the month.  It has been fun and the kids look forward to it.  Even Nels will take off running to our designated Mother Goose Time spot when we mention it. I like that I have minimal planning to do and it's time spent with the kids.  I feel like this can replace all craft kits we buy and some expensive toys and activities we do.  Money well spent.

Strawberry Dream Cake
Delicious!  I would totally make this cake again.  It took me all day to make this cake because I kept wondering off to help a child but despite the constant breaks the cake turned out and I faced no stress making it.

Baby Upright Tub
Success - posted here.

Quarterly Co. Subscription Box by Joel Johnson
I got a Sauerkraut making kit since the box is based on his grandma and his grandmas last name was from Germany - I think I got that right?  Anyway, I'm excited about this but will not use it for awhile since I'm overwhelmed as is.  I canceled my Quarterly Co. subscription until I can make use of the stuff I have.  I hope to grow cabbage in the garden this year so I can make Sauerkraut towards the end of summer.

Downton Abbey
I watched seasons 1 and 2.  I would have watched season 3 if it were free on Amazon video.  I really like "Pride and Prejudice" and shows like "Larkrise to Candleford" so of course I would like "Downton Abbey".  I feel like it gets lots of praise for just being different than most shows, not because it's actually an amazing show.  The TV genre really isn't out there so we've got very little to compare it against.
