Daring Baker: Pavlovas w/ Mascarpone

The June 2010 Daring Bakers’ challenge was hosted by Dawn of Doable and Delicious. Dawn challenged the Daring Bakers’ to make Chocolate Pavlovas and Chocolate Mascarpone Mousse. The challenge recipe is based on a recipe from the book Chocolate Epiphany by Francois Payard.

Big fat FAIL.

Here is the recipe and how they are suppose to look.

The recipe consisted of 5 different components and I messed up at least 1...maybe more.

So making the Chocolate Pavlovas was fun and easy.

And then making the Mascarpone Mousse (had to make mascarpone "cheese" before I could complete it) and the Marscarpone Cream (made with mascarpone cheese and Creme Anglaise sauce) were flops. I ran out of whip cream so I kind of watered down my whipped cream with whole milk and butter. Does not work. So to thicken up my mousse I had to add Cool Whip. If that's not a crime, it's at least a major sin. And my cream was far from the correct drizzling consistenacy. But was it good? Yes. Did I put the completed project in the fridge for safe keeping to discover a soggy mess later? Yes. I learned a lot. On things not to do.
P.S.
Chocolate flops = Happy kids

On A Mini Adventure!

Lucy hopped into the baby wagon today and yelled at Guy to take her adventuring.

Lucy cheers! She talked her brother into an adventure!

Guy is the perfect guide. Under the hose... not over.

Around the tree...not through it.

Finally they arrive at the adventuring spot!
Guy: "Here we are. Crawl on in there!"
Lucy: "Is that a pile of garbage? I don't think so..."

"You ungrateful sister! Get out!"

Worst adventure ever.

Water & Rails Tour

We went on a tour of peoples backyards over the weekend. They either had a train or a pond - some had both! It was very cool. With the kids we only made it to 4 places so I think we'll go again next year to see some more.

This one was near our house. Pretty neat backyard if you ask Guy!

Here's another train we saw. Lucy points it out for you.

Guy says "Choo-choo, bye-bye, see you!"

The Traveling Mustache

Lucy had her one year check up on Monday. After their appointment the kids get a token they can put in a machine to get a prize. The kids had decided on a little soccer ball but out of excitement Guy stuck the coin in the wrong machine.

We got a fake mustache instead! Who ordered those?!

Anyway, I was really impressed that instead of being upset over it the kids made the most out of it.

Daring Cook: Pâtés and Bread

Our hostesses this month, Evelyne of Cheap Ethnic Eatz, and Valerie of a The Chocolate Bunny, chose delicious pate with freshly baked bread as their June Daring Cook’s challenge! They’ve provided us with 4 different pate recipes to choose from and are allowing us to go wild with our homemade bread choice.

Well I tried to make the Trout & Shrimp Pate. Too bad I'm an idiot. I don't know where to buy trout and the meat man told me to buy the catfish. I bought the catfish and made Catfish & Shrimp Pate. My husband said it was okay. I don't like pate and I especially hate shrimp. I just made it for the sake of trying something new.

Recipes can be found here.

Results:
My favorite part. I should cook like this more often.

The finished product. Looks okay. I would have thought the shrimp would have been colored more. I guess I need to practice my flambe. You know one thing I did learn was how much I love pulling the tails off shrimp. It is kind of fun.

Bread. I just made a french bread. It was delicious, as all fresh bread is.

Lucy's 1st Birthday - Part 3

We went to Chuck E. Cheese for dinner! Lucy got on a ride before eating. She was worrying about throwing up on her birthday.

"There is a dog in this fine dining establishment."

Guy won some tickets for his lil' sis.

Two happy Chuck E. Cheese connoisseurs. Okay, so the food was awful. We noticed that all the adults there ordered the salad bar. So now we know!

This phone game is da bomb!

Uhhh... what do I do? He made it look so fun.

After Chuck E. Cheese we came home and Lucy played with her birthday gift, a little wooden kitchen. Then the sweet little one year old went to bed to dream of the best birthday she's ever had.

Lucy's 1st Birthday - Part 2

You know it's your birthday when your brother gets carrot sticks for a snack and you get Chocolate Teddy Grahams. Side note : we flipped Lucy's seat around and she loves it. She just sits and smiles.

Our friends Donica and Madi held Lucy's a party! Lucy found the book 'Jurassic Park' and brought it to Donica to read to her. Donica picked out some really hard to understand words to read so Lucy got the hint it was over her grade level.

Lucy ate her birthday cupcake! And says she would like to rub that hand all over somebody!

Going for an afternoon walk. Walking off those yummy cupcakes!

Little legs!

Lucy and her bff, Madeline.

Lucy knows you are suppose to read the card first.

Guy tries to teach Lucy to go straight for the gift! She got two super cute summer outfits!

Guy tried to entertain Lucy by kicking her in the face and then getting stuck. It was the thought that counted.

Lucy's 1st Birthday - Part 1

It is today! Here's pictures of this morning.

"Mother slave, scrub my back"

"Guy, here is a present for you to give me later."

"I'm the beautiful star of the day!"

"Mom, why are you taking his picture? It's my day!!"

"Young baby, I will throw you on your head for making me look old. Worst present ever."

I'll post more later because we haven't done anything fun yet.
