Honey Bees!

My husband and son drove for 5 hours today to pick up our honey bees. And my husband got them all situated! All I had to do was make them some sugar water and pack some snacks for the car ride. Easy day for momma!

We ordered a Beginner's Bee Kit from Brushy Mountain Farms which came with one super (the bee box). Jib found out that to make it through winter the bees are going to need more food than one box will hold. So while at Sacramento Beekeeping today he picked up a ready-to-assemble super and we'll get that built and painted and add it soon. We think we'll probably add another box so we can take honey without stealing the bees winter supply.

Happy 4th Anniversary

On Thursday me and my husband celebrated our 4th wedding anniversary.

To celebrate I made Beef Bourguignon which I served over mashed potatoes.
It took me three hours to make and this is the only photo I have to show for it. Oh well. At least I can say I'm "Mastering the Art of French Cooking". Or at least dabbling in it. We thought it was yummy. I don't like mushrooms or onions on a typical day so I'm not going to say this is the best thing I ever tasted.

My hubby brought home chocolate and flowers and balloons - wine coolers too! The next morning I felt awful because of those. And Lucy didn't make me feel any better by hitting me on the head with her sippy cup over and over again.

Anyway, it was a great anniversary and I think we've achieved quite a lot in our four years together. I think our years will just keep getting better and better.

Onion Planting

I ordered some onions from Dixondale Farms. The onions were dormant and I was suppose to plant 3 weeks from receiving them but 4-6 week before the last spring frost. Doesn't work that way in Nevada. Next year I'll have to write in the date for them to ship them to me because their guesstimate did not work but I am overall very happy with their ordering, shipping, and planting instructions. Just an error of a newbie (me). Last day of frost is estimated for mid-June here. I planted the onions on Sunday, hopefully they aren't already dead. It snowed on them yesterday.

Baby Steps to Responsible Shopping

Last month I tried to buy everything local and/or organic, not only did it cost a fortune, it was more time consuming.

One thing that is easy to to buy local dairy products.
The site WHERE IS MY MILK FROM? lets you type in the dairy code off your milk and will tell you where the cows that made your milk are. I was buying milk from Utah.

I learned which dairy products were from Nevada. Yay! But they don't make ice cream :( I'll get to ice cream soon. So far I know how to buy milk and butter local.

New computer and yummies

My birthday computer already broke so we have to send it in for repairs but we got a new desktop. Yay! It's nice to be able to use a full-sized keyboard again.

I did some baking this week.

I made cake from agave nectar for the first time. I got the recipe out of the May 2010 issue of Family Circle. BLEH!!!!!!!! I threw the cake away. I thought I'd be able to feed it to the kids at least and after one bite Guy just frantically shook his head no. I thought the agave nectar tasted good but so does honey and I don't think I'd make a cake out of that. I'd try baking with agave nectar again but not for awhile.

Baby Carrots!

I grew some teeny carrots! I was prepping the garden soil and found a little chunk of rotting compost carrot that had some babies!

And here's a picture of some picnicking kids, just because

ModCloth.com

Every little lady deserves to splurge once in awhile. I found some super awesome things on modcloth.com that I forced my husband into telling me to buy. I'm sure he just had work to do and wanted to get off the phone with me. But I have to do what what helps me sleep at night.

YAY!

Mastering the Art of Food Photography

In the past couple of weeks I've learned to make the best Marshmallow-Chocolate cake ever. It's prettier than a Porsche.

French style Asparagus w/ Hollandaise Sauce

Ciabatta. Yummiest thing ever.

My Birthday

My computer broke but thankfully for me my husband got me an Eee PC for my birthday :) That was two weeks ago so I think I know how to use this thing now. I just uploaded pictures for the first time today!

On my birthday I took the kids to the store to buy me a birthday gift.

Lil' Lucy enjoys loitering at the bean bag section of a store.

Guy celebrates my birthday like it was his own.

I like the Malcolm in the Middle episode about Lois's birthday.
