More of Guy's Shenanigans

Yesterday morning I heard some weird noises coming from the kitchen and found this...
I don't know how he managed this. I guess he is taller than I realize.

Mending Day

My least favorite day ever! At least I didn't have much!

I had a maternity dress that had burns in it from a friend's fire pit. A skirt that had ripped for the gazillionth time, a cloth diaper with torn gauze, and some shrunken wool socks. I only had 50% successes but I'm okay with that!
I tried to stretch the socks with this method - didn't work for me. I got them stretched some, but not enough. I think the socks were a little too felted from the dryer.

I didn't even bother trying to mend the skirt - it is looking rugged and will just rip again.

I fixed the cloth diaper the best I could by sewing fabric over the torn areas. It won't last long, but it will last longer. That's all I was shooting for.

For my dress, I patched it from the underside with b&w skull fabric. I was going to position it so you couldn't tell they were skulls and it would just look like a random b&w pattern, but a little skull faces peeked through when I was trying to position it and it just looked too cute! It's like Where's Waldo? It doesn't look the best, but it's better than what looked like cigarette burns.

Italian Herb Muffins

I made these muffins last night to go with our spaghetti. My husband hated them, my son thought they were just okay, and I thought they were the best! That means I'll probably never make them again.
Italian Herb Muffins

2 c flour
2 T grated Parmesan cheese
1 T sugar
1 T Italian seasoning (If I make these again I'll use less in hopes my husband likes these more)
3 t baking powder
1 t salt
1 egg
3/4 c milk

Garlic Butter (I will probably skip this next time and just use regular butter)
1/4 c butter, softened
1/2 t garlic powder

Combine flour, Parmesan cheese, sugar, Italian seasoning, baking powder, and salt in bowl. In another bowl, whisk egg, milk, and oil; stir into dry ingredients just until moistened. Fill greased or paper-lined muffin cups 3/4ths full. (I did greased, worked spectacular.) Bake at 400 degrees for 15-20 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Cool 5 minutes before removing from pan to wire rack. In a small bowl, combine butter and garlic powder. Serve with the warm muffins. Makes 10 muffins.

Guy Has Girlfriends

Guy wanted me to put this video up as proof to all his friends that he has not only one girlfriend, but two.

Guy's Lunch

Here is Guy's lunch yesterday. He eats leftovers, just like me!

He had broccoli and rice from Sunday's supper, ham from Monday's supper, my sister-in-laws homemade applesauce, and a Dora the Explorer cookie.

Bored Baby

On Friday I was oafishly watching The Simpson's and I looked over at Guy to see him solving puzzles in this book. By the time I got my camera he had finished them all and was just bored. I never felt more stupid.

Free Disney Scrapbook Kit

I sent away for my Free Walt Disney World Celebration Scrapbook Kit today!

All you need to claim this offer is the redemption form and your receipt for the two Jif or Smuckers products. There is no s&h charge! Yay!

Yesterday at Winco I bought two Jif products. I love peanut butter and Jif is my favorite! I even had a coupon. Phew. I can't wait to get this kit! It looks pretty Disney World specific and I've never been there, but maybe I can repurpose it... or just go to Disney World!

Baking Day

I have a pile of recipes of things I want to try. And the pile keeps getting bigger so I'm trying some new ones every week to get my pile down.

Yesterday I made:

Maine Mud Cookies I'm throwing out the recipe for these! They are just okay in my opinion, but my husband hates them. They have a cakey texture and very little taste. Not worth sharing the recipe for.
Homemade Chewy Granola Bars These are good, but I think I'll try some other granola bar recipes before making these again. They are thicker and chewier than I'd like. They would be easy to modify.
Here's the recipe for these:
Homemade Chewy Granola Bars (from Cooking for 2 magazine)
1/2 c packed brown sugar
1/3 c peanut butter
1/4 c corn syrup
1/4 c butter, melted
1 t vanilla extract
1-1/2 c quick-cooking oats
1/4 c sunflower kernels
1/4 c raisins
3 T toasted wheat germ
1 T sesame seeds
1/2 c semisweet chocolate chips

Combine brown sugar, peanut butter, corn syrup, butter, and vanilla. Stir in the oats, sunflower kernels, raisins, wheat germ, and sesame seeds. Fold in chocolate chips. Press into a greased 8-in. square baking dish. Bake at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes or until set and edges are browned. Cool completely on wire rack. Cut into bars. Makes one dozen.

Our Fun, Frugal Friday Morning

While on a drive with my husband during his lunch hour a couple days ago I spotted a "Friday - Free Breakfast!" sign on the side of my favorite deli, Gandolfo's. Me and Guy stopped by today for second breakfast, thinking it was a one time deal. I guess they do this every Friday morning. They pick one of their breakfast sandwiches and just give them out! Today it was a kaiser roll with roast beef, melted american cheese, and two over-medium eggs. It was huge and messy and I didn't really like it. But I could see my husband loving the thing. I would consider going back another Friday but I don't want to feel like a mooch. They did offer us two sandwiches (one for me and one for Guy) and I said no. Good thing too, we couldn't finish the one we got.

Guy likes the bun the best.

When Guy wasn't eating, he was tapping the shoulder of the man sitting behind us. I just taught him last night how to do that if he wanted to get someone's attention. I guess it stuck.
After our breakfast adventure we headed to the Family Connection building. It is a grant funded parent education building and indoor play area. They have lots of toys, books, a ball pit, a slide, a craft area, and much more. It's Guy's new favorite hang out.

Guy's Favorite Websites

These are Guy's two favorite websites. He wanted me to share them with everyone so they could have fun, too. I'm not sure who else would like these sites, but he loves singing and dancing along to them.

Weirdest Cookies Ever

My grandma gave me some of her old cookbooks and magazines last year and I was flipping through a magazine last week and found this recipe:

**CAKE COOKIES**
1 box (any flavor) cake mix

1 (8 oz.) carton Cool Whip

1 box powdered sugar
Combine cake mix and Cool Whip. Scoop with teaspoon and dip into powdered sugar. Roll into ball and place on cookie sheet. Bake 350 degrees until done.

This recipe made me and my husband laugh. Who thought of this??? I had to try it.

I used Funfetti cake mix because, well... it looked fun. I used store brand Cool Whip. And less than a cup of powdered sugar - you don't need a whole box! Mixing the cake mix and whipped topping was a challenge. I would suggest an electric mixer. I dropped them by the tablespoon, probably, not teaspoon. And ended up baking them for about 22 minutes.

This is what I got!

And this is the second batch hanging out in the oven. They look like little donuts.

I think these cookies are good. Not something I could eat everyday. Mine ended up tasting like giant Mother's Frosted (and Sprinkled) Animal Cookies. I like those.

Menu Plan Monday

Our Dinner Menu

M - Swedish Meatballs, Egg Noodles, Green Beans
T - Chicken Fingers, French Fries, Salad, Rolls
W - Caesar Pork Chops, Baked Potatoes, Mixed Veggies
R - Salisbury Steak, Mashed Potatoes, Corn
F/Sat - Leftovers/Freezer Food
Sun - Beef Stir-Fry w/ Veggies and Rice, Egg Rolls

Weekly Groceries

Here is the grocery shopping I did from last Tuesday until today.

CVS - Free, not even one penny. Paid with 4 ExtraCare Bucks, got 3 back.

Long's - Free, paid with gift card (about $9 - should get some rebates)
Walgreens - $4.54 (Should get a rebate for close to the full amount, plus the newspaper had a coupon for a free bag of chips at 7-11 and a free tea at Starbucks. I only bought the paper for the grocery store ads, too! Good surprises.)Walmart - $1.34

Raleys - $4 (I had been craving Mini-Wheats for the past month so it's about time they went on sale! I ate a whole box in two days and I'm not craving them anymore. Hooray!)
Scolaris - $4.88 (Two Gallons of Milk)

A&W - $5 (Five Hamburgers)

Grocery Outlet - $24.34
I didn't take a picture! Me and Guy went last night for fun and I was tired when I got home so I put it all away. Most of the money was for stuff for my husbands lunches (little bags of chips, candy bars, yogurt, fruit cups). I also got bacon, lunchmeat, some frozen foods.

Smiths - $17.45 (Me and Guy did this this morning. About $5 worth of this stuff was impulse purchases. I'm losing it! But at least I used coupons. All the Gerber stuff came out to $1 after coupons.)

I've spent $183.73 out of $300 so far. I'm about on target.

Guy Having a Drink

I got a video camera for Christmas! Here's a video of wee little Guy drinking some carbonated juice.

Tuesday, January 13, 2009

Little Aviator

Guy and I went for a walk around our apartments yesterday since it wasn't too cold. He was excited to get out. It's just been a little too cold for the both of us lately.

Guy really wanted to read the meters but gave up half way there. A little too rocky. I was surprised how long he contently laid there!

A Breadmaker First

I made slightly burnt honey bread with a surprise inside! The kneader pulled off so I had to cut it out of the bread. Whoops. The edges of this bread were too dark but it really does taste terrific. It tasted like Oroweat's Sweet Hawaiian Bread.
Honey Bread (1.5 lb Breadmaker Setting)
3/4 c Milk
1/4 c Honey
2 1/4 T butter
3/4 t Salt
3 c Bread Flour
2 1/4 t Yeast

Went shopping this morning.
01/12/09: Smith's- $26.85 (Weekly Shop)
Four of my things rang up wrong! Thankfully I had a figure in my head for how much it should cost. I was guessing $28. So when it rang up at $36 I was suspicious and checked my receipt before I left. Thank goodness.

Grocery Budget is at $124.69 out of 300.

Sleeping Guy

Guy fell asleep on me last night. When it was time to make dinner I was so proud of myself for squiggling out of there without waking him up. Didn't matter too much, had to wake him up to eat soon after.

Week's Groceries

01/05/09: Smith's Grocery - $37.93 (Weekly Shop)

01/05/09: Walgreen's - $1.46 (Used lots of coupons! Should get a rebate, too.)

01/11/09: Scolari's Grocery - $10.69

So I'm at $97.84 out of my $300 grocery budget.

New Board Game

I got a new board game for Christmas - Arkham Horror. What's so cool about it is you can play 1-8 people. One! Well, I'm not going to do that but it's a nice option. And all the players work together to try to kill some monsters. I like that. The rules were long and I finally finished them yesterday. After we put Guy to bed last night we started to play - an hour and a half later we had the board set up. Haha. It'll probably take us a week or so to finish a game but that's okay.

Tuesday, January 6, 2009

Strawberry Jam

I made Strawberry Jam in my breadmaker today!

I put in 1c sugar, 2c strawberries, 1T fruit pectin, and 2t lemon juice. In less then two hours I had the most delicious strawberry syrup. I think it'll thicken in a couple days. We'll see.

Menu Plan Monday

It's 2009 and I lowered our grocery budget for fun. It's at $300 a month, towards the end of last year it was getting up to $400. I include all food, eating out, OTC drugs, and disposable products in our grocery budget - pretty much stuff you buy at the grocery or drug store.

Not out to the best start but that's okay:
01/01 - Lunch at Qdoba (3 people, used coupon) - $10.06
01/02 - Grocery Store (3 lb. pork chops, 2 gallons of milk, pecan twirls) - $9.93
01/03 - Grocery Store (5 donuts, newspaper) -$5
01/03 - Thrift Store (12 plastic pants for cloth diapering) - $5
At $29.99 so far and I'm headed to the grocery store soon to pick up things for this week's menu.

Dinners
M - Hawaiian Pizza, Salad
T - Pork Chop Casserole, Deviled Eggs, Green Beans
W - Chicken Noodle Soup, Ham&Cheese Sandwiches
R - Peppered Chicken, Baked Potatoes, and Mixed Veggies
F&Sat- Leftovers/Freezer Food
Sun - Shepard's Pie, Stuffing

Happy New Year!

We went to an auction on the weekend and bid for the very first time! Jib got some tools and I got the above desk for $20! I really love it. Not only is it made of real wood and not particle board, I think it's the cutest thing ever. Plus it doesn't have drawer pulls so we were able to put it in the living room where little Guy hangs out.
