Homemaking Skills

I found this post via Carrie's blog. It is about six skills The Simple Mom thinks homemakers should know and why.

Here is my Homemaking Skills report card:

Sewing - (B) I am comfortable sewing. I sew simple projects and can mend anything. I can follow more difficult patterns, but they don't turn out great.

Gardening - (D) In the small space I have for potted plants on our balcony, I have some dead plants. I didn't give myself an F because I make a little effort.

Canning - (D) I've never done it. I have I book on the subject and eagerly await when I have the space for it. I have an interest in it.

Cooking from Scratch - (B) I think I'm good at this. I can make everything from scratch for all three meals on very motivated days. I do not many days due to being tired/lazy.

Knitting and Crocheting - (B) I can knit, I don't do 3-needles, but I think I'm good enough. I know the basics of crochet. I would like to get better at it.

Hospitality - (A) I like to entertain, but it's not that easy in my small apartment. I do the best I can. Even when attending other people's events I think I'm hospitable by bringing homemade food and helping clean up.

Baby is Growing Up

I was sorting Guy's old baby clothes and seeing what we could trade in for bigger stuff and I can't believe how tiny some of the clothes he used to fit in are!

Food Review: Entenmann's Little Bites Brownies

I love these!

One box comes with five little packages of three bite-size brownies. These cost over $3. They are far from a great value.

I go to the Entenmann's bakery outlet for mine. Our outlet has punch cards and after you buy so much bread and english muffins and stuff you actually need you get two products for free. I like to get junk food for my freebies.

Ice Cream Cakes

I know what you are thinking..."My, what a beautiful cake! It must be someone's birthday!"
Why yes, yes it is. It was my husband's birthday yesterday. And I made him an ice cream cake and then I dropped it on the floor.

It was an average Monday, but I tried to make it special. Like for breakfast I didn't crack or over cook his over-easy eggs. For lunch we picked him up from work and let Guy take him to Red Robin since that's kind of Guy's specialty.
After my husband came home from work he opened presents and feasted on pork chops and ice cream cake: version 2.

My Shoes!

I want to dress nice enough to be able to go into Church any day of the week without being embarrassed. But that's hard to do when these are my favorite shoes:I think dressing nice is what I should be doing, but maybe it's just not me? These shoes make me happy.

Belated Birthday!

July 1st was one of my my sister-in-laws birthday. I just finished her present. And I'm mailing it today! Whoops. Better late than never.

I made her a tote bag that just happens to be reversible (by accident!) I am really happy with it. I used one my my tote bags as a pattern and cranked this out during one of Guy's naps yesterday. Don't know why it took me so long, but sometimes it takes me awhile to get motivated.

Stud!

We went to a wedding this weekend. Once again, Guy was the best dressed.

Quick Craft: Tissue Holder

One geocache site I wanted to search for today was Pirate Themed! I wanted to participate and leave something pirate themed. I didn't have anything but some pirate-y fabric so I made a mini-tissue holder real quick. I have never sewn one of these and just eyeballed it. It turned out super cute! Then we couldn't find the cache! I turned over lots of rocks, hopped in many bushes, and nothing... We'll try again later.

Geocaching

My new hobby is Geocaching! For those who do not know, Geocaching is like treasure hunting with your GPS. You have the coordinates of a hidden something, like an ammo box or a film canister, and you have go to the coordinates and search!

We spent the 4th of July in my favorite town in Nevada, Genoa (population: 250). We had a picnic and listened cannons being set off. Guy stared at a clown. Plus, we did a couple of caches - found 2/3.

Genoa Cemetery
We did a GPS search for a headstone.

Genoa Park
We found a cache with trinkets. We left a toy and had Guy pick out one he wanted. He picked out a little red car that is a choking hazard. He is allowed to play with it when he has supervision.

We did even more geocaching today - we walked 3 miles along a river and found 3/5.

This has turned out so far to be a very fun family activity, plus we get to explore new places!

Ouchies!

Who needs teething rings and toast when you have nice, cool watermelon rinds?

I cubed the last watermelon I bought and saved some rinds in the fridge. (Yes mom, I washed them.) Guy loves them! He has one toothy through his gums and it's very crooked. He has his father's teeth.

Craft Night

Last night was my craft time. I wanted to sew, but I had a bunch of projects blocking the way of the good stuff. So I just did mending. I guess that's not a good way to spend my alone time, but I feel like a burden has been lifted since I'd been putting this off forever. Plus it was still a little fun.

I finished two cloth diapers I started with my mother-in-law, but never finished. I mended two pairs of PJ pants that had holes in them. And I fixed one pair of maternity jeans that had been sitting there for over 9 months! Whoops! Now I just have a cut out pattern I am not longer enthusiastic about, some PJ pants I plan to turn into PJ shorts, and a cloth book for Guy left in my mending pile. I don't know if I'll work on those next week or not. I dragged my sewing machine to the dining room in hopes of getting some done today. We'll see.
