Wednesday's Wardrobe

Today I wore the outfit I purchased on this trip. I don't button my shirt all the way up because Guy tore one off. I lost the button in the car so you think I could have found it. But it's lost!

My necklace is from my mom and so are the adorable ladybug clogs.

Both shirts are from Charlotte Russe and the jeans are from Abercrombie & Fitch.

I've been wearing skirts a lot since my first post about wanting to dress nicer, but it's a lazy cookie-eating day. I haven't wore a t-shirt since, though! Super neato.

Guy is wearing an Osh Kosh B'Gosh shirt, Gymboree socks, and invisible pants.
Additions to my wardrobe this week:
From yard sales: Blue tank $0.25, Brown tank $1, Necklace $1, Camping Hat $1

From the mall (went shopping while in-laws babysat!): Purse from Tilly's $25, Black blouse from JCPenney's $15.

Tackle It Tuesday: Sewing Cloth Diapers

I've wanted to try sewing some cloth diapers for awhile now, but kept putting it off. I finally decided maybe I'll make some for the next baby! Well, my in-laws are in town and my mother-in-law helped me with these! They turned out so cute and they work really well! We finished two and I have two more to finish. We used some material my MIL had leftover from a blanket and burp cloth she made for Guy. And for the middle padding we used some old cloth diapers that I didn't like.

Amateur Radio Operator

I'm an Amateur Radio Operator!

My husband, bless his little soul, can be a bit nerdy. He went to get his amateur radio license last weekend and I tagged along for emotional support.

I got my call sign today. Should I get customized license plates on my car? Maybe a baseball capwith my call sign on it? Did I mention I don't know anything about ham radios? (I'll learn! I promise!)

Being an Amateur Radio Operator is great.

Thrifty Thursday

Today is Thrifty Thursday over at Comical Coupon Cents!

For me and my husband's second anniversary instead of going out - we stayed in.

I made one of our favorite meals:I usually don't make our country fried steaks so big, be we lived a little. I am not a gourmet cook or eater. We love our chicken fried steaks! Our meal cost about $4.50 to make.

After dinner we put the little pumpkin to bed early. Then we watched a movie and just spent time together. I think we only checked on our little baby twice. He was just so cute.

We watched Alien vs. Predator Requiem which I rented from a Red Box for $1. The movie was terrible. But we are Alien and Predator fans so we wanted to watch it. I really love Predators, I think they are great. But the Predator in this movie didn't follow typical Predator etiquette. I wish they would make a Predator TV show and they would just follow around like a little baby Predator... going to school and playing with missiles and throwing stars and stuff.

Soup Night!

Tonight was our second soup night. I used my chicken stock to make chicken-n-stars. It was pretty good. My husband said after last week and this week he doesn't mind soup night at all! I served the soup with homemade white bread.

Four Little Projects!

My favorite scrapbook store had a party on Saturday which included sales and cake and projects! The projects were a lot of fun and even though I consider myself creative, these were really new and exciting to me! I wish I could think up this kind of stuff!

Wednesday's Wardrobe

Here is the dress from Christa Taylor's website! I love that is has pockets. Girls rarely get pockets!

The dress has a low back so I bought a tank on Saturday to wear with it. I found this olive green one at Factory 2 U for $2.99! I always thought Factory 2 U was a junky store, but I changed my mind. It is a messy store - with good things in it.

I'm also wearing jewelry from my husband and brown Birks from my mom. Now I just need to find a sweater or jacket to wear with this for chilly days.

Below is my other find at Factory 2 U. I love this skirt! It was only $3.99! The catch? It was covered in gaudy sequins which I spent an hour (one episode of Simon & Simon) tearing off. Well worth the effort!

Tackle It Tuesday: Book Repair

Remember this book?

Today I tackled it's repair! I used book tape and fabric. I (or I actually talked my husband into doing a lot of the work...) first taped the back cover, exposed spine, and front cover together to hold it a little better, I then taped a piece of chipboard to the spine area to create a new sturdy spine. After those two steps I tried to glue the fabric over the book tape for looks but I couldn't get any glue to hold it so I taped over the fabric :( Oh well...looks better than the before pic! I also taped up some pages on the inside of the book. I am very happy with the result. I can flip through the book now without worry of destruction!
P.S. That's brown fabric - not butcher paper! I picked that color because it kind of matches the text color.

Happy Earth Day/Anniversary!

Today is me and my husband's second anniversary! I can't figure out if two years is a long time or not. Seems like the time has gone by fast but a lot has happened.

Last year for our anniversary we traveled to a quaint little town of 250 people and stayed at a Bed & Breakfast. We dined at a French country style restaurant and I ordered duck. It was a romantic and unique trip.

A year later...our last anniversary sounds more like a hassle than a vacation. So what are we going to do this year? We're staying in! Dinner and a movie. Like a date at home.

In two years of marriage our greatest accomplishment of course is our little munchkin. But we've also accomplished a lot financially, when we married we had debt from the wedding and from buying a motorcycle and close to zero savings. Now we are debt free, with the exception of student loans (we've paid off about 1/3rd of that since our wedding!) and we have retirement and non-retirement savings that we are very proud of.

Marriage so far as been all I have hoped for. Some days I think it would nice if my husband enjoyed grocery shopping or coordinating scrapbook paper. But then I realize, that would not be the man I married! And I love him for his manly ways.

Corrupted Camera!

I recently started using my digital camera after a year of hiatus. I was using my husbands since my camera kept corrupting images. I almost threw it in the garbage after using it for just a month. I searched for the problem with my camera and lo and behold the maker, Canon, is doing free repairs on Powershot S400s! So I have that taken care of. But all the pictures I took this weekend are toast.

Message of my story - don't throw broken things away. It's bad for the environment. Send them back to the manufacturer who can throw them away for you. Then they'll be the ones that look bad.

Hamburger Bun Pan

I purchased a hamburger bun pan a year or so ago. I wasn't sure if it would become one of those kitchen things you buy and store and rarely use, but it was a risk I'm glad I took. I do not buy hamburger buns anymore - I make them. Plus I can use this pan to make round sandwich breads, like my favorite deli Schlotzsky's.I found the pan in King Arthur Flour's Catalog. MY FAVORITE! I love getting this catalog in the mail more than any magazine. It's pretty much the same every time, but I love looking for the few items they added and any new recipes. Side note: King Arthur Flour has great baking books and wonderful baking ingredients!

Tagged!

I've been tagged by Tasha over at
Comical Coupon Cents for a meme called 7 Things.

7 Things About Me You May Not Know.....

1. I think this is really funny. It makes me laugh every time. I do feel a bit guilty about it.

2. I donate my read magazines to the library. Unless I end up tearing out articles, then I recycle them.

3. We bought a new vacuum cleaner on Sunday. I have vacuumed everyday since.

4. I made cantelope baby food yesterday. It was received poorly. I liked it.

5. I think getting vitamins and minerals from a pill is kind of irresponsible but I take vitamins anyway.

6. I love dairy products, but I do not care for yogurt. I think the word "yogurt" is bizarre.

7. My little babe will be 7 months on Monday. He can't crawl yet. But he can do this:

Thrifty Thursday

Today is Thrifty Thursday over at Comical Coupon Cents!

Today my thriftiness is something I made. Blueberry syrup! First, I made blueberry muffins with some canned blueberries. No way around this - I had to have my blueberry muffins. (Side note - these are the best muffins ever. I guess you could call them Blueberry Cupcakes but I call them muffins so I can eat them any time of day.) You have to drain your blueberry's but instead of dumping the blueberry juice down the drain I made pancake syrup. I couldn't find a recipe for making syrup with just juice so I improvised. Over medium low heat I mixed juice, sugar, and corn starch until it was delicious. I put the syrup in the old corn syrup bottle. Genius! And keep it in the fridge. It is sooo good. We've had pancakes twice this week. I might even try to make a milkshake with it. I don't know about corn syrup in a milkshake... but you never know until you try.

Wednesday's Wardrobe

This is me today. It really has nothing to do with fashion.

I don't think I look like a mother or a wife. You know I was mistaken for a high school student recently? I'm not surprised.

Since I don't think anyone will ever nominate me for a luxurious make-over, I've decided to do it myself. I even have some money to spend on the ordeal. Hooray!

To start off in the right direction I bought the dress I wanted. It came in the mail the other day and I put it on immediately and danced. You know it has bunnies on it? I just love bunnies. And that's one problem I have with clothing. If they made baby clothing in adult sizes, I'd probably buy it without thinking.

Last Night's Dinner

I made Navy Bean Soup for the first time. I froze the ham bone from Easter to use. I also used salt, pepper, half an onion, three stalks of celery, water, and 50 cents worth of beans. Cheapest meal ever? Maybe.

To go with our soup I made Hard Crusty Rolls (a recipe from King Arthur Flour). Appetizing name, no? They just sounded like they would go well with soup. And they did.

The end result!

It isn't the most beautiful thing to look at but I was shocked how edible it was. Plus I have several pounds of leftovers.

I read in the book Miserly Moms if you want to live on one income and have a bus load of kids, you should consider implementing soup and bread night. And I was thinking "NO WAY! SOUP FOR DINNER?" But it was honestly a good meal. I'd make it again. But until then we have plenty of leftovers...

Tackle It Tuesday: Bathroom

I cleaned the bathroom today and in addition to all the regular stuff, I organized under the sink. I have no bathroom closet or cabinets so I just throw random stuff under the sink when I'm cleaning in a hurry.

BEFORE

AFTEROn the other side of the towels I have the extra t.p. and a box with all my extra shampoo and such. That side never gets messy because I have that side figured out.

Most people find this kind of stuff trivial... but this is my job and I take it seriously!! Just kidding. It's just kind of fun.

Guy's First Camping Trip!

We went camping during the weekend since it was gorgeous. We were seeing how little Guy handled it. He seemed to enjoy going for hikes and playing in the dirt. He didn't sleep through the night but he did better than I expected. For food we took MREs, trail mix, powdered milk, and jerky. Not that tasty - but it was an experiment. I don't intent to do that again, I really enjoy campfire cooking plus is tastes a whole lot better.

Here is Guy after an hour of camping. He got dirty FAST. Plus as soon as he didn't think you were looking he would start shoveling dirt into his mouth.

Food Budget

I am aiming to spend $250 this month on groceries. I include health and beauty, baby products, food storage, etc in this amount. I also include eating out if it is not done for social reasons or special occasions.

Today is the 14th and I have all my groceries until the 20th. I've spent $149 so far - $27 of that on diapers and $13 of that on Carl's Jr. Yummmmm.... I tried a Cap't Crunch malt at Carl's Jr. It was pretty darn good.

I have two more shopping trips left (I go every Monday) so I get to spend $50 each. That seems very reasonable.

Menu Plan: Week of April 14th

Monday
Breakfast - Bacon and Egg Scramble, Toast
Dinner - Lasagna, Mixed Veggies, Garlic Bread

Tuesday
Breakfast - Pancakes with Homemade Blueberry Syrup
Dinner - Ham and Navy Bean Soup, Crusty Rolls

Wednesday
Breakfast - Over Easy Eggs, Bacon, and Toast
Dinner - Pork Chops, Applesauce, Mashed Potatoes

Thursday
Breakfast - Eggs and Bacon Sandwiches
Dinner - Grilled Chicken Burger and Tater Tots

Friday
Breakfast - Oatmeal
Dinner - Leftovers

Lunches are going to be a mix of leftovers and turkey sandwiches. Snacks are banana bread, celery with peanut butter, and oatmeal raisin cookies.

Guy is pretty much eating anything and everything now. No allergies yet! I give him some sort of fruit, veggies, and cereals/toast everyday.

PJ Pants!

My husband wanted some PJ pants. So I made some. They are awesome! He won't model them! I found a model...but he was too small for the pants. So I made my model a replica pant. I didn't even use a pattern. Guy's little PJ pants didn't turn out well.. but the point is, they turned out.Ta-Da!

Christa Taylor Clothing

The Sparrow's Nest is having a giveaway for Christa Taylor clothing. Christa Taylor has so many beautiful clothes that I'm going to buy someday! That dress is on clearance so I might just talk my husband into buying it for me before it disappears! Unless he doesn't like it, then I might change my mind. But he'll like it, he has to.

Thrifty Thursday

Today is Thrifty Thursday over at Comical Coupon Cents!

I LOVE going to school. I like homework and tests and reading. I would get a Ph.D in General Studies if it existed and if I wasn't so practical and if my husband didn't mind if I threw our savings in the toilet.

So my Thrifty Thursday item is textbooks. I buy used textbooks on eBay. I read them at home and answer the questions at the end of the chapter.
Here are some recent purchases:
On Cooking is my favorite. It's for culinary students but it has so much useful information for the everyday cook. Plus if you ever watch "Hell's Kitchen" and wonder what the heck they are making, you'd find it in this book.

Those two little green books are Shelter & Clothing and Food & Household Management. They are from around 1915 and were for High School Junior and Senior girls. They are pretty much on how to be a housewife. I wish my high school taught this stuff...

I think I spent $50 on all those books in the photo and that is way cheaper than one college class so I consider this frugal.

Fun Money

In our budget we let ourselves spend $40 each a month on whatever we want. This amount is fine by me but my husband has expensive tastes so we upped it to $100 starting this month. I had no idea what I would do with all this money. I thought it would be impossible to spend! April 9th - over half of it's gone! How'd I do it?

$25 - Model Rocket Supplies. This is a hobby I have with my husband. I bought my rocket at Michael's and used a coupon for 40% off. I also bought some engines and such with a 50% off coupon. If I had to pay full price I may have just said "Forget it!" My last rocket, The Bandito, is probably in someones backyard. My new rocket was supposed to look like a spaceship. I kind of messed that one up...
Please meet the Hello Kitty Express...

$25 - Family Fun. My favorite magazine! They are having a Mother's Day deal - sign up 4 friends for $20. I couldn't resist since I had all this extra fun money and I know 4 people with kids. Plus I renewed my subscription for $5! I usually wait until I see free deals for magazines but I love this magazine so much I'll pay for it.
$20 - Bookbinding Tape and Fabric. When my grandma passed away last year I got her Mothercraft book. I haven't looked at it much for the fear of it falling apart. I haven't been able to find anyone in town that does repairs so I'll try it myself. I'll let you know how it goes.

Wordless Wednesday: Yummy!

Instead of a baby book, I have a scrapbook for Guy. Every month I make a page or more. Here is the January and February pages. I recently finished these.

Clucks and Cries

I'm making chicken stock today. First time. I hope this looks right...
And yes, I dropped a jar of parsley in there. Oh well. This is just for practice for later when I have my chickens and my garden.

Cute stuff.
Guy had some shots yesterday. He cried when the needle went in but after I picked him up he was snuggly and happy. Well, this morning when I took the band aids off he became furious with me. He might not be as tough as I thought...

Redbox Movies

A Redbox movie kiosk has appeared two blocks from my home so I figured it was time to learn how to use the bizarre contraption. A new release movie is $1/day or free for a day with a promo code.

Yesterday I used a free promo code to rent No Country for Old Men to watch with my husband after the babe went to bed. Too mature of situations for the little fellow. The movie was interesting... We both liked it... I think? Anyway I returned the movie today when I dropped off my recycling so the rental was completely free and I barely went out of my way for the privilege. Super.
